Bank — Account and cards

Opening a local bank account makes it easier to receive your salary, pay rent, and access newcomer banking products.

You are at step Bank — Account and cards (Week 1). Good starting point.

The motto

Start simple. No unnecessary fees at the beginning.

What is it?

A Canadian chequing account and a basic credit card let you receive income, pay expenses, and start building your credit score.

Why is it important?

Without this step, several procedures become complicated.

How to do it

Follow these steps in order. Nothing complicated.

  1. Compare newcomer offers (monthly fees, free transactions, welcome bonuses).
  2. Choose a bank that is convenient for you (branch, ATMs, mobile app).
  3. Book an appointment if possible.
  4. Bring your ID, general profile proof, and proof of address (if available).
  5. Open a chequing account and get a debit card for daily spending.
  6. If appropriate, ask for a small, reasonable credit card limit.
